There are, but hyperthyroid is harder to treat than hypo, so the doctors usually kill the thyroid and give you thyroid medications the rest of your life.
Endos have a pretty set way of treating this, and the other methods are less known.
You can go to thyroid.about.com and find a lot of information. And elaine-moore.com is an expert in hyperthyroid, and will tell you that it can resolve itself many times.
Trusting that the treatment for thyroid by endos isnt dangerous is just a lie, it is all dangerous, especially the radiation and PTU………so dont listen to people who dont know what they are talking about. Traditional chinese medicine has been treating successfully thyroid problems for many years. Look for articles by subhuti dharmananda.

Licorice : Is an excellent general thyroid herb for the glandular system and adrenals. It is considered a medium term energy builder and glandular balancer. May need to be taken for a couple of weeks at a time. *Do Not Use Licorice If You Suffer from High Blood Pressure.

Saw Palmetto : Although best known as a tonic for the prostate, Saw Palmetto is also useful as a thyroid herb and long term glandular builder so should be taken for extended period of time.

Natural Thyroid Health Recommendations;
1. Avoid fluoride (including that found in toothpaste and water) an chlorine (also found in tap water). Chlorine, fluoride and iodine are chemically related. Chlorine and fluoride block iodine receptors in the thyroid gland, resulting in reduced iodine reducing hormone production and finally hypothyroidism. Use a fluoride free toothpaste.

2. Avoid stimulants such as caffeine and alcohol. These upset the glandular system resulting in further imbalance.
3 Eat a whole food diet that consists of 75% raw fruits and vegetables. With whole grains, seeds, nuts, brown rice, legumes and millet. You may include natural whole food supplements but you must eat as well! Supplement with super greens foods.

4. Avoid “low energy foods” such as sugar, fried foods, saturated fats, meat, alcohol, caffeine and processed foods. Try a natural acid alkaline program or detoxification supplement.

5. Use a natural thyroid supplement with herbs that support thyroid function and nutrition. Thyroid Help is not a drug, medication or hormone, it is a natural dietary supplement.

I think i might have an under active thyroid. Looking for a natural supplement to help.?

I had my thyroid checked but my doctor says its fine. Thyroid disease runs in my family. my symptoms are: sluggishness, sometimes hard to focus, hard to lose weight easy to gain weight, i have slightly high testosterone, lots of facial hair, low libido, low hdl (50), acne mostly on back and shoulders but some facial and some cystic, i have been diagnosed with slight Pcos but i dont have most of the symptoms, i sleep alot and i have a low temperature.
I am looking for a natural supplement i could take and see if it would help. I cant take most vitamins because they cause extreme stomach discomfort. I was thinking i would need something herbal or homeopathic.
i forgot to mention im only 25

Maria Poole answers:

If your stomach can tolerate sea kelp then try that. Sea kelp is full of iodine that your thyroid gland needs for functioning.

You could also take the aryuvedic herbs Withania somnifera (ashwaganda) and Commiphora mukul (Guggul gum). The latter could also keep your LDL cholesterol at optimum levels and help you lose some weight if that is also what you are looking for.

Agnus castus might help with the PCOS as it works at the level of the pituitary gland to help balance out the hormones. Another herb worth taking is Saw palmetto to help with testosterone excess as it has some anti-androgenic properties. Also, drink lots of mint tea as it has been shown in Turkish studies to help reduce hirsutism in women.

These aren’t vitamins so hopefully you can tolerate most of these. But I would start off with introducing only one or two at a time. Start with the Sea kelp and mint tea and see how you get along with those. If you are OK then maybe introduce Agnus castus.

Do bare in mind that you will need to talk to your doctor first though if you are on prescribed medication before taking herbal supplements. Don’t take Agnus castus if you are on the pill as it would interfere with its functioning. Agnus castus may help boost libido. It is a known fertility booster so do bare that in mind if you decide to try it.

Get your thyroid hormone levels checked regularly because even if everything is OK now in view of the family history and your symptoms it would be wise to keep your thyroid function monitored. You may be near borderline. Hopefully one or more of these supplements will help with your symptoms.

Hope this helps.
Best wishes.

When a person ask question on yahoo answers and in particularly alternative medicine then it is required by those practicing AM and those who have been benefited or those who have not been benefited should answer, not those who just misguide a person who is suffering. A fare advice is expected from responsible citizens, any wrong advice can ruin the health of a innocent patient.
Place a right advice and then let the patient decide what is good for her/him with evidence and a scientific point. Never take the healthcategoryy easy to come and answer just to earn points.
Now on the main point.
Reasons:
Thyroid disorder is a result of acutee stress any medicine should not be started unless you can cure yourself with lifestyle change, food correction etc., a person who wish to say something, who wish to express, who wish to weep and express her/his feeling and do not or stopped (gala rundhna), and a person who is good to others and introvert, suffer from insomnia or sudden loss of business etc. Are some of the main reasons of hypo or hyper thyroid.
Lifestyle :
The first part of Ayurveda is Aahaar aur Vihaar (Naturopathy) helps to resolve the problem to become severe i.e. Avoid root vegetables and cabbage as they do not let the gland to absorb iodine.
Yoga the second part of Ayurveda has many asanas to cure a patient with strictly following aahaar & vihaar.
Proper Sleep:
A good night sleep is very important to cure thyroid (quit any job which require night shift i.e. Call centre, hotel etc.). When you go to sleep after about 90 minutes when you are deep asleep your pituitary gland starts sending growth hormones which are received by thyroid (TSH) and they are called thyroid stimulating hormones. Stress and bad night sleep, disturbing and bad dreams disrupt this process. So try and get sound sleep.
Herbal Medicine:
Certain food which are to be avoided and certain food (herbs are also vegetables, dry or fresh) added can also help in many medical cases. Black pepper 3 pcs, tulsi patra 3 pcs. And neem patra 5 pcs. (fresh leaves) stimulate thyroid gland and help function normal.
Ayurvedic Medicine (in particular Ras Tantra Saar):
Are given to a person who have tried everything and still suffering for permanent cure. Actually Ayurveda is alternativ medicine system, but Ultimate medicine system which have human trials experience of more than 5000 years, there any substitute to it?
Finally, in my 22 years experience my wife was the first patient and i prepared medicine for her and after taking thyroxin for 2 years i gave her my medicine for 90 days and she is normal since last 5 years, i can present black & white clear evidence of her of the cure. And many more other patients.
Actual facts:
Alopathy has very good research on almost every problem but in many cases has no medicine to cure, the main reason is they only believe on visible clinical results but not on non clinical things like God, aura, kapha, pitta, vayu etc., They are close to genetics which is the body constitution of a person which was passed on by their parents.
Research before you start, you get one life once.

Read a book called You Are WHat You Eat by Gillian Mc Keith.

Iron deficency test: Go to the mirror and pull your lower eyelid and see if the color is red or flesh color. If its flesh colored you are lacking enough iron and should take a herbal iron like Floradix. It will take a month to see a difference. Iron carrys oxygen in your blood and if you dont have it you will feel tired, cold hands and feet, headaches, RLS, dull brittle hair, brittle nails, poor sleep, pale skin (see thru), shortness of breath, fatigue, poor concentration, low mood, ringing in the ears, irregular heart beats, cracks in the corner of the mouth, dizziness, fainting, sore tongue and canker sores. Add b12 and folic acid for best results.

She needs to work out and eat healthy to help her body. Drinking hot tea will raise her metabolism and also taking 1 (ONE) capsicum capsule a day will also heat her up internally to speed metabolism (find at health food store).

She needs to stay away from all white flour products because they contain bromine and harm her thyroid also chlorine pools harm thyroid. SHe can also take a product called IODORAL (google) for 6 months to get her iodine levels up in her body so her thyroid will start functioning.

Dr Oz didn’t reccomend any acai berry diet. He said that acai berry is a very healthy food with amazing nutrition (which it is) However, he doesn’t recommend any particular product and I believe there was no mention about weight loss anything.

Also, the thing that most people mean when they say “acai berry diet” is that you’ll take diet pills, it’s not however a diet in the sane that you’ll eat this or that.

Anyway, you are going to have to diet and exercise anyway to lose weight. There is no magic pill that makes you lose weight, so diet and exercise are the only way to weight loss (although acai berry can help a bit with those results)

I’m not an Oprah watcher, but I get what your saying.

I read something yesterday on WebMD about people who try to loose weight, and only ONE out of 100 kept it off. (something like 5000 in the test group). Guess what those few people did different? Yup — they make a lifestyle change when it came to eating properly, and they included moderate exercise. Shocking I know.

Thing is, i see this all the time at the gym. I get so frustrated but can’t say anything. (not for me to comment). Ladies on these silly super restrictive ‘diets’, they loose 20 lbs, feel great about it, then end it…and poofta! 2-3 months later they are emotional wrecks because they weight came back. So what do they do? Choose another super restrictive diet and repeat the whole thing. I’m pretty sure this qualifies as a learning disability.

Maria Poole answers:

I feel your pain!! I have a slow thyroid too, so I know what you mean about feeling bad. Are you on the proper dosage of thyroid medication? Are you taking it correctly? You are supposed to take it 1 hour before you eat anything in the morning with a full glass of water. You may want to check with your thyroid doc if you are doing that and still feeling bad.

As for the workout, even in the off season you can go to the gym and workout. Do some weight lifting to keep your arm strength up, do some cardio and ab work…you don’t have to kill yourself, just keep your body in the habit of being active and you’ll feel better once the season starts again. Your muscles are going into hibernation in off season, and that could make you feel kinda’ sluggish. Then, it takes you all season to get them back in top shape again. Drink plenty of water and get enough rest. With the thyroid problem, i know i feel tired a lot of the time. Also, there are foods that you can eat that slow your thyroid down even more! Stay away from soy stuff completely. Check it out on the net, there are tons of websites that can give you more info about what you should and shouldn’t eat with a low thyroid.

How do you know you have a low thyroid function? And if you do , why aren’t you on any medication to correct it? Just to let you know, hypothyroidism can cause depression!! You probably need to see your doctor. The advise I gave you wasn’t about losing weight either…it’s just a routine to follow that will keep you fit and in shape in the off season. Being active never hurt anyone!

If the individual hairs are becoming thinner in certain areas (bang/top/crown) without seeing excessive shedding, it may be androgenetic alopecia. If you have excessive shedding it may be telogen effluvium. I used essential oils for my own hair loss condition which was very severe. They can help both types of hair loss but it is best to know what type of hair loss you are dealing with. If it is telogen effluvium you will need to get to the underlying issue. You can learn more about the types and causes of female hair loss and using essential oils at the links below.

Vitamins & supplements, when to take, how to take, what to take in combination?

I take a LOT of supplements. As soon as I see a story on a particular vitamin, mineral or other supplement, I go out and I buy some and then use it for a few days/weeks. But I feel as if I’m wasting my money because I don’t really see any difference in how I feel.

I’d like to know if there are particular times of day that it’s best to take certain supplements. What vitamins I should take with food and what type of foods in particular. What vitamins/supplements I should not take together. What vitamins/minerals/herbal supplements are recommended for a woman in her 40′s with a mild thyroid problem.

Finally, which supplements will have the most impact on energy and brain function. I eat relatively healthy – no fast food, little junk food, lots of fruit, veggies and fish. I exercise as much as I can, but often have little energy or motivation. I’m 20 lbs overweight, but feel it may be due to missing nutrients because at times, I have incredible bursts of energy. Any suggestions??

Maria Poole answers:

Supplements can be beneficial if taken in moderation. You’d probably do best to take a multivitamin on a daily basis and then try one thing at a time for at least 3 weeks at a time, preferrably 6 or 8 to really know if the supplement is helping. Pay attention to whether your energy bursts are related to caffeine or sugar intake OR if they are related to your moods, that is a typical thyroid symptom.

I hate to latch on to a side note in your question, but you have two major concerns as far as your energy goes. The first is a thyroid problem even if minor can cause you to feel really sluggish. I have an enlarged thyroid myself which tests on the low side but normal. I take a small dose of thyroid medication (to hopefully take the stress off and slow the growth of the gland) which helps me to feel better as well. If you have a doctor that recognizes the problem, you should definitely pursue treatment. That alone might help you lose some weight and feel better. Second, exercise is probably more important than the vitamin supplements. You simply need to walk on a regular basis, if you can fit in other exercise too, great. I have lost 37 lbs in the past year and I feel so much better, I had no idea that I even felt so bad! Exercise is the key to feeling great, supplements are a side note.

BTW As far as supplements go, if you can convince your body its food it will get absorbed better and you will get more benefit from it.

I had same problem you need to go see an endocrinologist. It will make the biggest difference in your life don’t waste your time on a regular MD believe me i did and lived to regret it. If your levels aren’t correct you can go it to a coma if low enough that’s why you sleep so much, If i wouldn’t have finally gone to Ohio state university hospital i probably wouldn’t be here today. Go to a specialist!!!!!!

Hey Ramadan. Do you wear a burqa? Do you take vitamin D3 supplements?

Vitamin D3 is made by the body when skin is exposed to sunlight.

Auto immune diseases (multiple sclerosis, thyroid problems, arthritis and many more) are on the rise. It is speculated that, in the West, the rising popularity of stronger sun block cream may be a contributing factor. Vitamin D3 protects against many other illnesses too, including some forms of cancer.

I was thinking about a rise of MS in Iran since the Islamic revolution when the wearing of the burqa became more widespread (I’m right, aren’t I?)

You can see what I’m getting at. Women who cover themselves should take vitami9n D3 supplements. They’re cheap and they are very, very good for you!

I think that there should be awareness within the Muslim community. Perhaps there already is. Is there? Do you or anyone you know who wears the burqa take D3? If not then I think I’ll write letters to my local mosques..
Wow, so much hostility. I’m surprised.

-yikes – yes D3 occurs in, for example, fish, but the amount of the vitamin that you get from diet is is about a quarter that you’d expect from a day with skin exposed to sunlight.

– You’re quite right. I don’t think of people in gardens because no one in my neighbourhood has a garden. Some blocks have access to a communal garden, but that’s about it.

And D3 is much cheaper than you say – $3 for 60 tablets..

People aren’t getting enough vitamin D though, that’s a fact. ( http://www.cbc.ca/canada/montreal/story/2010/03/05/mcgill-vitamind-study.html ) And the incidence of auto immune disease is rising dramatically. But if you all think that the problem doesn’t exist, I’ll ignore it.
Hello Priya. My aunt has MS and so I have read up a lot on what causes it and what prevents it. I read lots and lots. I was just trying to help.

Oh, I don’t imagine that you do wear a burqa. I don’t imagine that the majority of people here do. They certainly don’t in the mildly racist London section, so I didn’t post this there. I thought that a few people in London did dress like this though and I thought that perhaps they weren’t getting enough vitamin D. I’d class anything under 10,000 international units daily as not enough. It’s quite a lot.

Anyway, no one thinks there’s any truth in what I say, so let’s forget it. The chances of getting ill are pretty slim, hardly anyone gets ill, so it doesn’t matter either way.

Dietary Supplements?

I am a 24 year old young woman with a hormonal imbalance. I am taking 2 hormone medicines, 1 for hypoactive thyroid and 1 for low testosterone. My doctor assured me that after a couple of months taking these medicines, with diet and exercise, that I would lose all the weight I have put on since last summer because of my hormone imbalances. I am so frustrated because I have not lost any weight and I have been on these medicines for 7 months. Are there any diet supplements that actually work that I can take that will help me?
I am 5’4, 180 lbs, and I consume between 1000 to 1200 calories a day since that’s what my doctor tells me I should eat. My exercies varies from weight loss pilates to brisk walking for 30 minutes. I really don’t know what I am doing wrong!

When I had thyroid problems I was put onto a nutritional diet coach who helped me to lose over 40 pounds, it took six months but was well worth. He made sure I was healthy all the way through and has shown me how to keep the weight off. It wasnt always easy but I got great support and help from the coach. The products I used were really good and they were picked so that I could take them safely with my meds. Try www.myhealthabc.com, you can get great advice and help from these guys. There is an email link so you can explain your situation and they contact you and see what it is you want to achieve. I hope this helps.

Maria Poole answers:

Thyromine is a top class leading thyroid supplement, however while it does work for most people not everyone responds to it in the same way, which is quite normal and the same for any type of treatment people take. People that tell you that Thyromine is a magic pill that works 100% of the time are really not being completely true.

I tell you this so that you have a balanced perspective of the thyroid supplement, however I believe Thyromine is one of the best choices of supplements for maintaining a healthy Thyroid gland and feeling great.

There is no need to go through life feeling tired and out of energy all the time, or carrying extra weight caused by your Thyroid, because Thyromine is effective in helping relieve these thyroid related problems.

Another very interesting thing that many people are not aware of, is that the Thyroid can be negatively impacted by exposure to chemicals, toxins and pesticides. Therefore it seems crazy to treat Thyroid problems with potent pharmaceuticals, that are only introducing more foreign and unnatural chemicals into the body.

This is not a problem with Thyromine, because as mentioned earlier it is made from completely natural ingredients, is safe and works with the bodies natural systems.

I do recommend Thyromine however it doesn’t work for everyone at the same rate, as nothing does, and some people may respond to it faster than others, which is totally normal.

At the end of the day, whether you choose Thyromine or another Thyroid supplement, you will be glad you did as a healthy Thyroid will put the spring back into your life

I have a swollen thyroid, but my levels are normal; my fam practitoner put me on synthroid, but I’ve only been on it for less than a month. Can anyone explain how cortisol and testosterone would affect me? Why am I so tired?
Also–I found a lump in my breast in March and had it biopsied–it was a fibroadenoma. Is any of this connected?

Maria Poole answers:

You could have Addison’s disease, which is adrenal gland insufficiency. The adrenal gland produces hormones, and regulates many body processes. Your thyroid may be swollen because it is working too hard to produce enough thyroid hormone, which would indicate an overall hormone problem.
The fibroadenoma has nothing to do with your other symptoms, they are extremely common.
Make sure you get a COMPLETE physical, with blood tests including blood counts, liver tests, etcetera, plus any pelvic and colon tests also.
Hope you feel better soon

Yes, some of the signs and symptoms you mention may be typical of hypothyroidism, or an underactive thyroid gland http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/hypothyroidism/DS00353. Hypothyroidism can make you feel depressed.

Hypothyroidism can be diagnosed with a simple blood test called a TSH or a more involved one called a Thyroid Profile.

A physician can prescribe thyroid hormone for you to take daily. You will have to return within a few months for another blood test to make sure you are getting the right amount of thyroid hormones. If your thyroid hormones become too high, this can be dangerous, so your doctor will have to occasionally take blood to test your levels.

No period, weight gain, fatigue, low sex drive, not preggo and not thyroid…HELP!?

This is going to be long, but I need help. ASAP. I am going to start off in chronological order as best as I can. I am 18. I got my first period in the 4th grade, it was never regular but I could count on a period ALMOST every month. It became irregular when I was about 13 years old. I was sexually abused when I was 9-11, then at 12 I was raped, but I never had a problem with my sex drive, I seen a psychologist. I met my fiancee when I was 14, we hit it off and started dating when I was 15. We became sexually active but we were ALWAYS careful. I was a normally sexually active teenager. My last FULL period was when I was dating him for about 6 months, so I was still 15. It was a really bad period. I had to change my (LARGE) tampon every hour. At one point I remember him asking if I was dying because I was in that much pain. I went to the doctors and they said it was pretty much no big deal. Even though almost every month I could count on the cramps, back pain, and fatigue. About a year ago I went back to the doctors. She told me she had no real answer but her thoughts were, thyroid, obesity, or menopause. Well, I was at a normal weight and only 18 so she figured it was thyroid. She tested me and it came back negative. Over the past year I have noticed a HUGE weight gain. About 20 lbs within a few months. I still have no period. I get BAD cramps that almost feel like gas, but there is no gas. I get bad headaches, bad lower back pains, loss of sex drive (big time), sleepiness, sore boobs (especially my right one), sharp pains in my nipples, and also may I add THE HEAT FLASHES! About 8 months ago, my fiancee and I thought we would start having unprotected sex. We are in a very good financial situation, and if anything did happen, we know we have a good support system. Both of our families support our decision. So, eight months and no baby. I was starting to wonder if this could be pre-menopause. Or something different? I can’t count how many times I have been to the doctor and they have no answer. Can some one please try to explain to me what my body is going through? Any answer can lead me a step closer into the right direction. Thank you.

I think I can answer your question…I believe you have PCOS..POLYCYSTIC OVARY SYNDROME. It’s a hormonal imbalance in the body that creates irregular periods, weight gain, cycst on the ovaries (which will have to be proven in your case with a vaginal ultrasound), temp. Infertility, excessive hair growth in unwanted areas, and tireness and lost of sex drive. You can have mild or all symptoms, everyone is different. My irregular cycles started eversince 14 and the doctors would always tell me it was normal to be irregular but as I grew older, I knew something was wrong. Now I’m married and ready to have kids, it’s been five years and it’s been very hard to conceive because I didn’t know what was wrong with me. We spent many wasted years trying it natural and turned to clomid. It didnt work so well because I always need progesterone to induce a period since I was always irregular, sometimes once or twice a year only! Clomid didn’t work because I never really kept at it because I never ovulated correctly so my cycles never regulate well. Now after five years and extreme envy of others around me concieving, we’re trying again. I had pcos all along, which was confirmed by my fertility specialist. I was put on metformin 1500mg – 2000mg per day to regulate my hormones and regulate my cycles. Metformin alone helped me concieved in the first month that I was on it! I’m now twenty-six weeks along with a healthy baby boy. Talk to your doctor about PCOS and if you have it so you can make sure you’re getting the right treatment. I know it’s hard when it seems like everyone is concieving and you don’t know what seems to be the problem. If your doctor isn’t helping, find one that will help. Let them know your intentions of starting a family. I hope this help…it was a long and bumpy road for me and the husband. I wish you a sooner route and lots of baby dust!!

I’d go see a Neurologist. Having no sex drive isn’t normal. You need to have some serious testing done. It could be nothing. Then to, it could be something serious.

Your body could also still be adjusting to you no longer taking birth control pills.

Should you EVER again have to change a pad or tampon every hour or every two hours. GET TO THE HOSPITAL. You’re losing to much blood to quickly. You could die! I know, I’ve gone through the bad bleeding thing myself. I was turning gray and almost passed out. When I got to the emergency department, they said had I gone to sleep I may not have awakened the next day. Get your blood tested again to see if you Anemic.

Is sudden weight gain and hair loss a thryoid problem?

When I turned 16 I was thinner than 80% of the guys my age and I had a full head of hair. By the time I was 16 & 6 months I had a gut and my hairline had badly receded. Around this time I also stopped growing at 5’8”. Before, during, and after the weight gain I exercised regularly, ate healthy food, and did not take medication. 7 years later I’m 23, still have a gut, am almost bald, and I’m hairy on my body. I’m otherwise healthy and I live a healthy lifestyle. I’m strong and alert but I do get tired easily. I know that weight gain, stunted growth, hair loss, and fatigue are all signs of hypothyroidism in men, but of course they could also be caused by other things.

Is the weight-gain just because I stopped growing? Or could the weight, stopped growth, hair loss, and fatigue be signs of thyroid problems? Obviously I won’t get taller now, but if I have a thyroid problem then can it be treated with hormones? Is it too late for me?

Does taking synthroid make you eat more?

HI, I was diagnosed with Hyperthyroidism and started taking synthroid a few months ago. Since then I feel hungry more often and feel like I need to eat more often. Because of this I have gained weight even if I watch what I eat and exercise. Has anyone found any correlation to needing to eat more and thyroid supplements? Thanks.
Thanks for responding to my question. I meant to say that I have Hypothyroidism, not hyper.

Maria Poole answers:

Okay, the confusion here, is Synthroid is a synthetic hormone that triggers the release of the hormones related to your metabolism. It is prescribed for people that have under active thyroids (hypothyroid). If you have hyper active thyroid (racing heart rate, underweight, inability to be still, jittery, excessively hungry) you should not be taking Synthroid, at all.

To answer the direct question, yes, taking Synthroid will increase your appetite, as well as give you more energy. However, you usually don’t gain weight, unless you are going totally over board. Quite the opposite-you will eat more and lose weight.

Hypothyroidism is not due to iodine deficiency, and supplementing with iodine is most likely to make matters worse, by aggravating the already weakened thyroid gland, so it’s not an effective treatment.

Synthroid isn`t a dietary supplement, it is a hormone your body requires to function properly.
Senna is a mild laxative
